Wearing a hat, rubber boots, and holding a fishing rod, I’m sitting here on the roof of Joachims Carrées. I’m not fishing for fish, but for everything that makes a stroll through the city special: shopping, strolling, discovering store windows, meeting people, and collecting memories.

I’m a tribute to the vibrant downtown – to a place full of surprises, favorite finds, and stories.

You may have already spotted me: up on the roof of the Joachims Carrées, right in the heart of downtown Hanover. I’m sitting here with a fishing rod in my hand – always on the lookout for my next catch.

But don’t worry: I’m not fishing for fish. Instead, I’m fishing for shopping bags – symbols of everything the city center has to offer every day: life, encounters, little discoveries, spontaneous purchases, and beautiful moments that you take home with you.

Why am i
sitting up here?

Of course, because of the amazing view. From up here, I have a perfect view of the bustling activity in the city center: people coming and going, running into each other, strolling past store windows, browsing the shops, discovering something new, or enjoying the sun at a sidewalk café.

And that’s exactly why I cast my line into the flow of city life. On my hook are all the little and big things that make a stroll through the city so special.

The real shopping experience can’t be put into a shopping cart – it happens along the way.

How did I
end up here?

I’ve been perched above Thielenplatz since August 2025. But my arrival wasn’t quite as spontaneous as it might seem: it took about five years of planning, development, and obtaining permits before I could take my place on the roof of the Joachims Carrées.

On the night of August 28–29, 2025, I was finally hoisted up there with a crane, precision, and a good dose of patience. Ever since, I’ve been sitting here, casting my line into city life – as though I’d always belonged here.

Who
created me?

My story begins with GETEC Immobilien, the owner of the building on Thielenplatz. During the renovation, at the initiative of Dr. Michael Behrens, the idea arose to give this place something special: a striking art-in-architecture installation that sparks curiosity, brings a smile to people’s faces, encourages reflection, and appeals to young and old alike.

Designer Helmar Brodehl from Hanover developed my story and my appearance from this concept, which gradually took shape. I was deliberately designed to be young, pop-inspired, and vibrantly colored – as a lively contrast to the clean, minimalist architecture of the newly renovated building. It is precisely this contrast – the playful element within the austere – that makes me visible and alive.

I look like an oversized toy: comic-book-style, playful, almost childlike – with a wide-brimmed fisherman’s hat, a colorful cape, giant rubber boots, and my big fishing rod.

Together with a dedicated team from Accentform, I was finally built and installed. Underneath my hat lies a sturdy steel structure with a molded shell and a surface made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic. In short: I’m storm-proof and rooted in the earth – just the way people in Lower Saxony like it.
